Ntoskrnl.exe
Kernel & System
Description
Ntoskrnl is the core of Windows and provides key system services such as hardware virtualization, process and memory management. . Ntoskrnl contains the Cache Manager, the Executive, the Kernel, the Security Reference Monitor, the Memory Manager, and the Scheduler, along with other components. It also provides key portions of the Native Application Programming Interface used by device drivers. This version does not use Physical Address Extension.
There are four source versions of the kernel, of which only one is used as follows:
NTOSKRNL.EXE, single-processor without PAE
NTKRNLMP.EXE, multi-processor without PAE
NTKRNLPA.EXE, single-processor with PAE (XP and later)
NTKRPAMP.EXE, multi-processor with PAE (XP and later)
Ntoskrnl.exe is a 32/64-bit executable that requires no direct user interface.
This directory holds the 32-bit system files on the 64-bit editions of Windows. WOW stands for Windows On Windows. When a 32-bit program runs, Windows will simulate this directory as being c:\windows\system32 for backwards compatibility.
This holds compressed driver cab files. Cab files are used to extract a needed device driver when new hardware is added without requiring the Windows XP installation CD. Each service Pack adds additional .cab files.
The WinSxS directory holds Windows Side-by-Side DLLs. WinSxS allows multiple versions of the same DLL (code libraries) to exist on the same system. This ensures that every application will get the DLL version they were tested and designed for. The result is improved application and system stability. See details for full directory location.
There are no known security risks in using Ntoskrnl.exe assuming it has not been modified or replaced by virus or malware and it resides in the default directory. This file is installed as part of the Windows operating system.
