To start or confirm the Backup and Volume Shadow Services are running:

  1. Select Start, then in the Programs List, select Administrative Tools, then Services. As an alternative, you can type "Services" in the search programs box (Windows 7/Vista) or open the Run dialog (Windows + R) and type services.msc
  2. Depending on your configuration, if you are prompted for the administrative password, enter it when prompted and select OK. The Component Services Dialog appears:

  3. Select Services (Local) in the left pane, and scroll down to Windows Backup in the center pane.
  4. Double-click on the Windows Backup entry. The Properties dialog should appear:

  5. Set the Startup Type to Automatic and then click on Start. Once the service is started (as shown by the progress completion dialog disappearing) click OK.
  6. Repeat steps 3 through 5 for the Volume Shadow Copy service.
