Windows Help

There was a problem running the macro. (1037)

  Description

The software is typically using an old Windows help system, that is no longer supported by Microsoft, and is not provided in Windows Vista and later. It can be installed, but marco support is typically turned off, which causes this error to appear if the help file uses macros. One of the reasons macros is turned off, is macros leave a security hole that malware can use, should you download an infected help file.

To enable WinHelp's macros, you need to add a new registry entry as follows:

  1. Log on by using an administrator account.
  2. Press R + the Windows key to bring up the Run dialog and type: regedit and Enter.
  3. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
  4. Locate the following registry subkey and click it:

    On 32-bit versions of Windows:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft

    On 64-bit versions of Windows:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft
  5. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
  6. Type WinHelp, and press Enter.
  7. Click the WinHelp key. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  8. Type AllowProgrammaticMacros, and then press Enter.
  9. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  10. In the Value data box, type 1, click Hexadecimal in the Base area, and then click OK.
  11. Exit the Registry Editor.
