To perform an action when clicking on a file, windows uses the file extension to locate the appropriate program to load. There is either no extension on the selected file or the extension is not associated with any application program.

To associate a file (and others with the same file extension) with a specific application program:

Method 1:

  1. Open explorer, and right-click on the file, and select Open with. If the Open with option does not appear, use Method 2 below.
  2. Select Choose default program.
  3. Near the bottom, make sure the option Always use the selected program to open this kind of file is checked.
  4. Select a program form those listed, or click on Browse to find additional programs to select.
  5. Click on OK.

Method 2:

  1. Click on the file. A dialog should appear indicating Windows cannot open the file.
  2. Click on the option: Select a program from a list of installed programs
  3. Near the bottom, make sure the option Always use the selected program to open this kind of file is checked.
  4. Select a program form those listed, or click on Browse to find additional programs to select.
  5. Click on OK.
