Open the printer and check that the carriage moves without an obstruction over the full travel (left to right and back). Check that the ink cartridge is properly installed. Also look at the gears to confirm they are reasonably clean (no debris in the cogs of the gears such as paper).

Clean dust and debris from the carriage area. The position strip (a plastic strip about 1/4" wide on some printers) may be need to be cleaned.
