If the tray is really open and you still get this fault the open tray switch may be jammed.
With the output tray open, look on the right side where it hinges to the body of the printer. If you look in the hole, you will see a micro switch that the tray flips up when it is open. That is the likely culprit. Try blowing it out with 'canned air' or stuffing something in it to make it think it's open.
