Error Copying File or Folder

Cannot copy file:

  Description

The file cannot be copied. This is a bit unusual, as Windows normally specifies the file name along with the exact reason it can't be copied - such as the source does not exist, or the file is locked, you lack the correct permissions, etc.

Character Limitations

A number of characters are not allowed in the folder names and file names.

Invalid characters include all control characters such as tab, linefeed, etc (values 1-31), the null character (value 0), and these symbols:

< > " \ / | * ?

In addition, the folder and file name cannot end with a period or space.

String Length Limitations

The entire drive, path and file name combination cannot normally exceed 260 characters in length, although Windows can support up to 32,767 character when the path string is prefixed with "\\?\" the long path indicator. It is less clear that third-party applications will reliably support this, so it's best to avoid it if possible.

For example: \\?\d:\folder\my long path-filename here

The CD/DVD file system standards are even more limited and depending on the file system, may limit you to 64 or 128 character file names.

Close Files in Use

To proceed with actions on the file or folder, the application using it must release it. Either save or close the open file.

If you continue to get a warning, try closing the open application.

If you had an application crash since powering on, Windows may think a file is still in use, when it no longer is. A reboot should clear the issue.

You'll use the Recovery Console to check and fix file system problems. To get to the Recovery Console prompt. insert the XP installation CD and reboot the system. Assuming the BIOS defaults to booting from the media (usually the default) a "Welcome to Setup" screen appears. Press R to load the Recovery Console.

At the prompt, type: chkdsk /r

For detailed instructions with screen shots to run the recovery console, go to Using System Restore XP/2003
