Cannot remove folder : The directory is not...

  Description

The folder has items that prevent it from being deleted. This can occur if a file is in use by another program, or in some cases a lock was placed on the file or folder but was failed to be released (as if it is still in use).

Use Unlocker

There is a third-party free (but ad-supported) product UNLOCKER that can often clear away locked file problems and issues when a folder or file can't be deleted. It is available at a number of download sites. For example: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/Unlocker.shtml

This program is only for Windows 2000/XP and the author no longer maintains a website or updates for Unlocker.

Fix Data Corruption

Data and/or file structures on the drive may be corrupt. Run the check disk program or other disk validation and repair utility on the drive. To do this:

  1. Open Explorer or My Computer (Press Windows+E).
  2. In the right pane, right-click on the drive you want to validate and select Properties.
  3. Select the Tools tab.
  4. Under Error-checking, click on "Check Now".

  5. In the next dialog, make sure the option "Automatically fix file system errors" is checked. If you want a more complete validation and repair check the option "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" (although this takes considerably longer to complete).

  6. Click on Start.

Several software products that offer an extensive range of disk diagnostics includes Fix-It Utilities Professional and SystemSuite Professional. Other diagnostic products include Eurosoft's PC Check and Iolo's System Mechanic.

Fix Disk With Chkdsk

Run the Window disk check and repair program CHKDSK as follows:

  1. Open the Run dialog (Windows key + R) and type: chkdsk c: /f
Replace "c" with the drive letter you want Windows to check and repair if it's another drive other than C.

  2. In many cases it will return with a question: Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

    Enter Y.

  3. Save any open files and close all applications. Restart the system to have Windows complete the disk test and repair.
