Although unusual, the RPC service may be disabled or stopped. Normally this is a critical service that should always be running.

For Windows 8/7/Vista:

  1. Windows 8: Press the Windows key and X at the same time. Select Search.
Windows 7/Vista: Select the bottom-left Windows Orb, and

  2. In the search box, type Services. Under the heading "Control Panel"

  3. Windows 8: select Services.
Windows 7/Vista: select View local services.

  4. Move down the list to find "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)" and verify it's status is Started and the Startup Type is Automatic.

  5. If is not running, right-click on the "Remote Procedure..." line and select All Tasks, then Restart.  To set the Startup Type to Automatic, right-click on the same line and select Properties. On the General tab, you can set the Startup Type to Automatic.

For Windows XP:

  1. Click on Start, Control Panel, and Administrative Tools.  In the pane, select Services
  2. Move down the list to find "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)" and verify it's status is Started and the Startup Type is Automatic.
