  Description

There is a shortcut that is damaged or the target has been moved or deleted, so the shortcut no longer works.  This can happen due to a partial uninstall of a product, renaming a program files folder where the shortcut is not updated, or moving program files to another location.

The shortcut error is common with iTunes. If you believe this is the issue, to run iTunes:

  1. Open the Run dialog (press Windows key + R).
  2. Type %PROGRAMFILES%\Itunes
  3. Click OK.

Fix Startup Issue

If you get the shortcut error when starting up Windows, one of the startup programs (that start when the system first boots up) has shortcut that is no longer valid.

To view or change the startup items:

  1. Open the run dialog by pressing the Windows key + R.
  2. Run the windows configuration program by typing msconfig and press Enter.
  3. Click on the Startup tab.
  4. In the Command column review each entry to locate any shortcuts (the extension will be .lnk). Rarely are shortcuts added into this list, so most will be .exe files, that you can leave alone.

On any .lnk entries, uncheck the box to the left to disable the shortcut from running at startup.
  5. Click OK.
  6. The change will not take effect until the next boot cycle.
