To fix the problem where the directory has a space, apply this registry fix:

  1. Open the Run dialog by pressing Windows key + R. Enter regedit and press OK.
  2. In the left pane, navigate to the location:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSInfo.Document\Shell\Open\Command
  3. Double-click (default) and change the key from:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo\MSInfo32.exe /msinfo_file %1

    to

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo\MSInfo32.exe /msinfo_file "%L"
  4. Exit the Registry editor.

You can use Notepad (or other editor you prefer) on non-standard files. To do this and associate the editor with the file extension in the future:

For Windows 7/Vista:

  1. Using Explorer, locate the file on your computer.
  2. Right-click on the file and click Open with...
  3. In the Open With dialog, if Notepad appears, select it, but you will likely need to click on Browse. If so, in the Open with... dialog, navigate to C:\Windows and select Notepad, and then OK.
  4. Near the bottom, add a check-mark by Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.

    Click OK.

For Windows XP:

  1. Using Explorer, locate the file on your computer.
  2. Right-click on the file and click Open With
  3. If you are given several options in the menu here, select Choose Program
  4. In the Open With dialog, select Notepad under Programs.

Add a check-mark by Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.

    Click OK.
