Error 1704. An installation for is currently...


An installation was started and a reboot should have occurred as part of the process, but the user selected NO. This left the product only partly installed and in a suspended state. The second installation cannot occur while the first installation is in this suspended state.

For installs with multiple CDs, an installation started from the wrong CD (i.e. the second CD) can also cause this condition.

  The first installation will be attempted to be undone, and the new installation should continue. Due to a poor installer design, it's likely the same error message will reappear and the system may be in a worse state!

  Cancel this second installation (recommended). It will not fix the first installation.  
  Solutions and Fixes

Ideally select No. Restart the computer and run setup from the SECOND CD. The installation should complete sucessfully.

If you selected Yes, perform the following steps:

  1. Let Office Setup to continue until it prompts for a restart.
  2. Click Yes to restart the computer.
  3. If Office Setup is run in Maintenance Mode after you restart your computer, quit Maintenance Mode.
    1. Click Cancel in the Maintenance Mode dialog box.
    2. Click Yes to the Are you sure you want to exit Office Setup? question.
    3. When prompted, click OK to cancel setup.
  4. Allow the current Setup program to finish.
  5. When the Setup program is finished, repair the former installation.
    1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    3. Click the program name from the list, and click Add/Remove.
    4. Click Repair Office.
    5. Click Repair Errors in my Office Installation, and click Finish.

Your new installation should be complete.
