Description
Windows has a registry problem, but the registry is not corrupt.
This is a fatal Windows error, typically called a Stop message, Bug Check, or more commonly the Blue Screen of Death (BSoD). The system is in a forced reboot state. Any unsaved work is likely lost.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

The disk drive may have some corrupted sectors. It is best to run this repair outside of Windows as follows.
For Windows XP, boot from the Installation CD. The the first option, press R to go into the Recovery Console.
At the Prompt, enter:
chkdsk c: /r
This operation may take some time (hours), so be patient.
The /r option will look for defective sectors and clean up any found bad sectors. It also attempts to read and save any data from defective sectors. This option requires the disk be locked, which cannot occur if Windows itself is running from the drive.

Free Up Disk Space

The system disk (typically C:) may be full. We recommend at least 1 GB of free disk space be left on the Windows system drive at all times. To get additional space:
Remove deleted files (right-click on the trash-bin and select Empty recycle bin)
Remove unneeded files, such as browser cached files.
While BSoD fatal stop errors are identified by Microsoft Windows, they are often caused by
non-Microsoft applications, drivers and hardware issues.
