Fatal Error Solutions

This system may be infected with a virus.

STOP: 0x0000008B

The MBR (Master Boot Record) has changed since Windows last checked. The MBR holds the first information read from a hard drive and it controls the start of the boot process. The most common reason for a change is a virus infection.

Some older versions of Windows will show the description as "MBR_CHECKSUM_MISMATCH"

This is a fatal Windows error, typically called a Stop message, Bug Check, or more commonly the Blue Screen of Death (BSoD). The system is in a forced reboot state. Any unsaved work is likely lost.

  Sample Screen

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

This system may be infected with a virus.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Using an Anti-Virus product with the latest pattern files, scan the system for viruses and malware. Often this is called a deep-scan where it looks at every file in the system.

Several software products that handle the detection and removal of Viruses and Malware include Avanquest's Fix-It Utilities Professional and SystemSuite Professional. Other commonly available Anti-virus products are available from Computer Associates, F-Secure, Kaspersky Labs, McAfee, Sophos, Symantec, Trend Micro and others.

A mismatch has occurred in the MBR checksum.

After the Stop code will be 4 hex values: {Parameter 1, Parameter 2, Parameter 3, Parameter 4}.

Parameter 1 specifies the disk signature from MBR.

Parameter 2 specifies the MBR checksum that the OS Loader calculates.

Parameter 3 specifies the highest physical page.

Parameter 4 is set to 0.
